Ham Radio
From HackMiami
I seemed to have sparked an interest in getting Ham Radio license at the last Hack-a-thon. Here are a few links to get you started.
[edit] General Info
- US Amateur Radio Bands a graphical chart depicting the different bands and what classes can communicate on what bands. Depending on you license you are limited to what bands you can communicate on. If you have an Extra class license you can communicate on all amateur radio bands.
[edit] The Exam
If you can, I recommend people to study for all three exams (Technical, General, and Extra). It costs $14 ($15 in 2010) just to sit and take the test(s). You pay the same price for just one or all three exams. If you are just a novice at electronics or engineering then just study to pass the technical exam.
- Ham Test Online. This website contains sample tests online. A lot of the questions are identical to what you will see on the exam. It is suggested you take this online exam several times before taking the actual exam.
[edit] Misc Info
- International Telecommunication Union. The people that standardize and regulate international radio communication. They are part of the United Nations.
- World Amateur Radio Prefix Maps. The Ham radio license is reciprocal with other nations. When using your ham radio in other countries you should read up on their radio laws. Also, one thing that is very common in another country is to say the prefix of the area/country you are in.
- World Amateur Radio Prefix Maps Application. This is an interactive map/globe of the amateur radio prefixes.
